Josh Wood, Sir Nuchliai of Southall likes you He does and wrote this: "Someone tell that Josh Wood guy on the other board that I like him and he's probably right about Thief and Blind." But he's too bloody lazy to register on this board to tell you himself. Im not a fan of this idea that Southall is now like an overlord who just looks over us and judges what we're all writing but doesnt speak directly to us! He just sends his henchmen with messages! Woot, go tell him hes a dick from me!

Just to clarify, are you comparing the directional shift between the The Bends and Kid A to TGWO and "Embrace"? Cos thats a bit bonkers mate. Completely agree with losing Radiohead after Kid A after loving The Bends and OK Computer. But this is nowhere near as much of a musical shift as that was. No obviously the shift in Embrace's case is much smaller - I was just using Radiohead as an example of what happens when you sacrifice melodies for experimentation, electronics, production etc. which is what I think Embrace have done to a much lesser degree. The more I listen to the album the more I realise that the evolution has been less dramatic than I feared on first listening. What's bugging me at the moment I'm sorry to say is that on I Run (which is my favourite song on the album) I think Danny's vocal is not his best - there are times when he's audibly struggling with pitch - and while this may be expected in live performances to have problems on the album version is rather worrying. Listen to Retread and then I Run and compare the quality of the vocal - it's really concerning and rather puzzling. In fact it's worrying me so much that last night I had a dream that I was seeing them live (as I will be in a few weeks) and Steve was on lead vocals!! Haha, thats not a dream thats a nightmare!

I love how so many of the folk who come on here just to say how much they hate the album are unregistered guests. Pinch of salt anyone? yeah how do they find this place now though with it being removed from the main site?

If you google "Embrace fan" the results are quite entertaining.

Sales of the album from Monday's sales only are as follows (not sure whether this includes pre-orders): Albums 1 Palo Nutini (11.3k) 2 Damon Albarn (10.4k) * 3 Embrace (6.6k) * 4 Imelda May (6.2k) * 5 Pixies (5.1k) * Do you work in the industry or something or can you get that information online? No (although I did briefly around the time OON came out). The place I get that info is www.buzzjack.com/forums/Chart-Chat-f2.html - look for threads called Sunday Chart Predictions (for sales updates during the week) and Sales (for final sales for the week just gone). The numbers usually originate from the Music Week website. What it means is that (unsurprisingly) the band are unlikely to beat the 75k (ish) that TND sold in its first week or the 55k (ish - I think?) that OON sold. But then the industry has changed massively since then, so it's no real surprise. Will be important to stick around in the top 5 if at all possible, and top 10 at worst, come Sunday, as it will make radio/tv etc more receptive to future singles/promo.

I don't know if this makes any sense but Refugees makes a lot more sense within the context of the album. I'm enjoying it a lot more than as a single.

Protection and I Run are working their way into my ear today after another two listens earlier.
I can't be the only one thinking Quarters has to be a single; they need to flood the clubs, get some really great remixes together and that song could be absolutely huge!

I went to the Magnetic North screening in Moston on Saturday with an open mind having not heard the album.
It is a change of direction but I love it. I can't stop playing Protection at the moment. It sounds like New Order meets Trevor Horn there is that much going on. I am hooked by the bass line and the ending. I can definitely see a World Cup montage when England crash out "Can't see the future but I know it's got it's eye on me" "You spin off the rails chasing your tails as everything fails do want all the details" "My world comes crashing down when you're out of my league" (Or possibly Quarters if we go out in the quarter finals- "I feel myself surrender I'm your defender")

After a week of almost constant playing I think my favourites are: protection, I run, quarters, at once & thief on my island

I can't get At Once out of my head these past couple of days. It's Embrace-y and amazing.

You're not, totally agree Nope, you're definitely not alone in thinking this. I will weep with frustration if Quarters isn't a single! I think it could be the song that would really change people's perceptions and shake off the Post Brit Pop label once and for all.

Update from me after a full weekend of listening. I really like it. I think its lyrically one of the strongest theyve done, There's no sloppy mush about looking as you are and la de da run of the mill love songs. The "ballads" on here have substance & bite and are much darker than anything theyve done before, maybe thats what's alienating a few people? I also dont agree with the lack of melodies complaint. Im a big melody guy, i like bands to progress and try new stuff but if it doesnt have a melody behind it I wont like it, this album, for me, combines enough progression and experimentation to make it sound interesting but retains the big anthemic oomph Embrace have always had. Follow You Home has more hooks in it than a bait n tackle shop. Self Attack Mechanism for me is one of the strongest tracks theyve done in their career and I cant Adam and Eve people who think its the weakest track (see what i did there?)! Goddamn you all for being different! Its interesting that moving away from the Coldplay lite stuff they've become associated with that they may have alienated some of the fanbase, I hope thats not the case, cos this album to me is what Embrace have always been, theyve just ramped it up to 11. I'm afraid we'll need to agree to disagree here big time. Yep, I wasn't a fan of the uber-soft stuff like LAYA, and even Gravity to an extent, but as has been mentioned in this thread, there just appears to be too much going on without a 'solid' melody. It strikes me as a mess. Whether that is because they have had the songs for so long and have kept adding things, I don't know. Or maybe just the first attempt at self producing (think I'm right in saying) just was too much to deal with.
I find Self Attack Mechanism a God awful track, the worst I've heard them produce. And sadly I don't find the album as Embrace turned up to 11, I find it's Embrace dropped back down to 5. It still sounds like Embrace, but it sounds like Embrace b-sides to me. Again I should say, this is only my opinion.
One thing I do find quite funny is how perceptions of albums change. On the previous incarnation of this forum there was a huge amount of folks saying This New Day was the best album musically and technically Embrace have ever done. Then as time has passed and the band indicate a bit of indifference, the groundswell of opinion seems to be it is the worst they have done and should almost be disregarded. I do wonder, given that the tunes on this album are unlikely to capture the public whether the same fate may follow. It's a fickle old game.

Sales update:
1 Palo Nutini - Caustic Love (16.4k) 2 Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots (13.4k) * 3 Imelda May - Tribal (8.9k - 85 copies ahead) * 4 Embrace - Embrace (8.9k) * 5 Pixies - Indie Cindy (6.5k) *
So it's slipping, but only just. Looks like top 5 is very likely, but top 3 is touch and go.

Whether that is because they have had the songs for so long and have kept adding things, I don't know. I'm not comparing the two but continually adding stuff didn't hurt Bohemian Rhapsody. One thing I do find quite funny is how perceptions of albums change. On the previous incarnation of this forum there was a huge amount of folks saying This New Day was the best album musically and technically Embrace have ever done. Really? I honestly can't recall much of that but I do remember a lot of talk of it being overblown and rushed.
