This is called You're Gonna Miss It All by a band called Modern Baseball. It's rock that some call emo and some call pop-punk, but to me it just sounds like twenty-somethings trying a bunch of different things. Their voices are the types you'd be familiar with if you listened to emo and pop-punk though, so I get it. The lyrics waver from verbose and ill-fitting to pleasingly immature would-be proverbs. For instance, the opening track starts interestingly with, "I hate worrying about the future cause all my current problems are based around the past," but then veers into "that way there's no way that I'll assume that you're wasting all of my time to vent about your problems like how your Instagram stopped working" (a line that I, personally, think is relatable and funny, but I can understand how some people could find that grating). It's just guitar and bass and drums, but there's an exciting energy to it, and there's a hunger to these guys. You can hardly believe that they've stumbled upon some of their hooks - by rights they don't seem to have any more claim to them than any other cheap punk band, but they're there right in the middle of Apartment ("I walk home with my eyes low dreaming of conversations we'll have tomorrow") and The Old Gospel Choir ("Can we act like we never broke each other's hearts?"). And the production doesn't feel like that of a cheap punk band, it's immediate and has a lot of punch to it. There's one song, Your Graduation, that switches vocalists after the line that's probably singlehandedly made it one of the more popular songs from the album: "Bullshit you fucking miss me there I said it I guess I'll talk to you in a few months." Two Good Things, the penultimate track, starts out as an acoustic plucky thing with a quick little rhythm to it (it even seems like it might be a little too cute at first) before building into a swirling spiral of guitars to close. It's not glued and slapped together - it comes off as crafted specifically and carefully. I can't stop quoting the lyrics, I'm sorry. This isn't how I usually do things, but I'm addicted at this point. Some don't quite work, but I love them for trying: "Sharp as a tack, but in the sense that I'm not smart, just a prick." Some are just beautiful, to me at least: "A brick boot swimming lesson in the deep end of my adolescence." These guys are on their way.

William Onyeabor luakabop.com/onyeabor/Nigerian keyboard maestro from the 70s/80s, recently thrown into the spotlight by David Byrne's Luaka Bop record label. Funky as hell. The Amazing Snakeheads www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8ONa0WJtgwI came across these while checking out which bands are playing at TGE. Shouty and obnoxious sounding. Love it. Ibibio Sound Machine www.youtube.com/watch?v=axAMtKJbywcThis has been getting a lot of play on 6music. Totally infectious. I bought the album after hearing 2 singles, and it's great.

In honour of its 10th birthday I've been giving Faded Seaside Glamour some major eartime.
Still sounds as fresh and amazing as it did on day one and I can't bloody wait for the birthday party next week.

I still clearly remember stumbling upon the band playing in an unsigned tent at a festival before the album was released and realising they were something special. Have always been disappointed and surprised that they never took off more.

There were some duff choices along the way that condemned them to never hitting it big when they could and should have. Now that 3/4 of them have kidlets I doubt we'll ever see anything more than a few gigs here and there and maybe a new record at some point but I feel deep down that they're unlikely to want to put in the legwork they'd need to for anything else now.

I realise I added absolutely nothing to this thread with my comment above by the way, just was reminded how much I like them and had to proclaim so! I'm away to listen to them now

I've been listening to a lot of old albums this week including this lovely little number by Mojave 3....... I saw these live at the Jazz Café in London and it was the first gig I'd ever been to on my own but I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

Archie Bronson Outfit - Wild Crush. These guys are always quirky, with the odd great tune just jumping out and catching you. Check out We Are Floating from this album for an idea.
