Having been watching some footage of previous secret Gigs and hearing several songs of IYNB i can't help but think this is such an underrated album. I love the flow of it, the way each song compliments each other and a few of their best songs such as Wonder and the sublime Satellites.
Am i alone in thinking this is a massively underrated album?

It's a beautiful album to listen to on a summer evening. For a while it was my favorite Embrace album. Over is one of the best things they've ever done. The sound of that opening guitar on Wonder is fabulous. Many Will Learn washes over me like a wave, gives me chills all the time. I waver on HWYTTS - sometimes it doesn't hold much for me and other times I get carried away by that last minute and a half and I never want it to end. The title track's so fun to sing, and again, the last minute and a half has a certain magic to it. Satellites is so beautiful that it's hard to listen to.
No, you're not alone (OMG EMBRACE LYRIC). But there are definitely some clear peaks and valleys, even though it's cohesive in a way that none of their other albums are. It's beautiful and restrained and it struggled to impress. I think I remember reading something Richard said one time about him falling out of love with guitar during this album, and you can hear that in hindsight. It's probably the least Embrace thing they've done. I love it anyway.

Didn't this release coincide with the whole getting dropped from the Radio 1 playlist thing?
I can remember them touring this at the Barrowland. Not sure if they were expecting a more muted response due to the press around the release, but the crowd seemed to amaze them, and lift them. Still easily the best gig I've seen them play.

Didn't they basically get shafted by Hut as well?
It's got some moments of pure perfection, but as Josh says it's also got some fairly weak moments. Overall i agree though, under rated.

Stunning album, I have so much love for it. I can still remember the tingle that went down my spine when they used to open their shows with "Over".

If You've Never Been was the most 'immediate' album for me....bought it, put it on in my car...and drove around smiling!

Might as well offer a dissenting view here. 'Over' is great, but I was disappointed with the album when it came out, and it's not really grown on me since I'm afraid. Having read all of the praise on here though, I shall give it another bash.

Listening to it right now and couldn't agree more with how you describe it, I just would never have been able to put it so eloquently.

It's a lush sounding album & definitely has a summer evening & sun setting type of vibe to it. It also has a restraint/melancholy that they seem to have forgotten. The biggest misstep for me is the cheesy title track, doesn't seem to fit the mood of the rest of the album.

I think it's the restraint that puts me off it actually - I find several of the tracks a bit insipid and feel they need a kick up the arse!

I loved The Good Will Out because it was bolshy and had a bit of that 90s swagger, songs like I Want The World had more than a bit of Brit Pop attitude, but then hidden in amongst that were gems like That's All Changed Forever, Higher Sights and The Good Will Out. DFM has some gorgeous songs, I Had a Time being one of their most beautiful imo, but there's also the much needed bouncier, thumpier numbers. That's what was missing from IYNB for me. I suppose it's personal preference and if you prefer the ballads then IYNB is a lovely album but it's just not really to my taste.

Having said all of that, I've spent the whole day singing Wonder, which is a gorgeous song.

I had this very conversation with Southall the other night when he played me a few tracks of the new album. Beforehand I'd come to the conclusion that a lot of what I listen to now is fairly subtle, has shades of quiet and loud and if I really love it it's taken me on a musical journey where it ends up sounding nothing like it started. I'd got to the point where I thought the band had got a huge box of new musical ,toys and decided to play all of them at once on every new song I'd heard so far. I've not dismissed the new stuff though, I still need a proper listen; a throwaway have it on in the background listen, then a sit down with headphones in a dark room listen and then a zoom down the motorway listen. What I love about IYNB is that it was the album that got me into the band, the one where I had to listen because I could finally see past the hype and Oasis copycat cocky northern brothers nonsense I read everywhere and where I could swoon to Over and Satellites. It also made me listen to the back catalogue and then it watched me kicked myself for missing out on so much beforehand. As an aside, there's a place near here called 'Over.' Every time I drive past it I have to sing the opening lyrics. Embarrassing when I have passengers.

They're probably too occupied with gripping their seat, having their eyes closed, and screaming.
