Well what do you think? As fans we will buy it, so is pre release streaming aimed at us? Who is likely to listen? Will it make a casual listener buy?
Is there any research on the marketing value of it?

Is there any research on the marketing value of it? I think the aim is that those that will buy anyway might then share it with people who might be less likely to. Try before you buy. I'll often listen on Spotify or Youtube before making a purchase, the modern day equivalent of the listening booth I suppose. Not sure re: marketing value and whether it's a tested and proven thing though.

You'd like to think there'd be something concrete to base the streaming on. I am genuinely interested in the 'science' of it. The evidence. Pre release streaming has been about for a while.

I was interested in this thread and found the following: www.thembj.org/2013/08/pre-streams-and-album-releases/This bit I felt was relevant to Embrace: I suppose it is in some ways like radio airplay. You hear a tune weeks or months before release and then it has often grown on you that much you buy it on release. It can work the other way with tunes getting overplayed to the point of irritating. More info also here: criticalrecordingstudio.com/blog/music-industry-trends-pre-release-streaming/It seems to be a strategy now to enhance sales and there is also info to suggest file sharing can also increase sales even though I thought that would be the opposite.

I guess the success of streaming an album early is dependent on how many people actually stream it, and in Embrace's case, how many people actually know about it.
The Telegraph seems an odd choice to stream the album, and I would'nt have had a clue they were streaming it if I had'nt read it on here.

I don't think it's going to make a huge difference. The full songs have been taken down now, when I last checked the most times a song had been played was around the 6,000 mark. Would that make a difference to the UK charts?

Would that make a difference to the UK charts? I think these days, depending on what else is released the same week 6000 sales would make quite a big difference to chart position

Based on this years trends, 6000 sales would usually get you into the top 10.
6000 streams doesn't mean 6000 unique people listened to it though.

I wouldn't have thought album sales through the official store would be chart eligible either.
I suspect the GETNO crowd will be very disappointed next Sunday.

With little to no tv exposure, and no chart single to bring attention to the album I agree with you. Its a shame (if you care about chart positions) but realistically its to be expected for a band like in Embrace in the year 2014.
