It's pretty much three months to the day since the album was released and I wondered how we each felt about the songs now.
These three threads are to vote on what you think is the best song is on the album, the song that's your favourite (not necessarily the same, they're not for me in any case) and the song you skip the most.
So, to start with, what do you think is the best song on the album, and tell us why - don't just vote!

Quarters, obviously, and by a country mile. It's a dangerous song to drive to as it just cries out for massive acceleration and five minutes of VRRRROOOOOM. Probably the Embrace song that gets danced to most, not to mention it's not a tune, it's a TUNE.

Refugees. It feels perfect in some ways. They couldn't have done better with the idea, it's done out so well. I think Southall, when Refugees came out, described the keyboard runs in the instrumental breakdown before the middle eight as "bleeps and bloops" or something, and I thought maybe he was right for a while. But now those little flecks of melody, stopping and starting, completely make the song for me. I feel like I could write a whole essay about how every repetition of the bass line and every small variation on that descending keyboard run makes my heart feel. And the lyrics in that middle eight are heartbreaking, especially when read as being about the band. It's hard to get that idea out of your head once it's entered. "When you settle for less than I promised you, knowing that all of our barrels are scraped..." Well, fuck. I don't think Danny wrote it with that in mind. But it hits like a freight train in that context.
This is a band that's always been big on promises, and for me, they've hit more than they've missed for sure. But they're hard on themselves, and the public's hard on them, and it's all a bit shit. But fuck that and fuck them, because this fucking song exists, this is the shit, this might not be the comeback single we wanted or expected, but it's the one we deserved. This shows that they're not fucking done.

Quarters is the song I go back to, but when I first heard "in the end" I stood gasping it had the potential to be another embrace hit its a song that should have been released as a single and it's sad that I run got picked over it, In single terms I would have gone with ITE, then Quarters, then Refugees and finally FYH in that order

Refugees...it's quite complex in it's construction but the different components blend really well, I love how Danny's vocals are kept back until the final throes and then satisfyingly wrap up the whole saga.

I loved ITE the instant I heard it. It was pure Embrace (no bad thing in my book). Single releases were always going to be pretty much pointless but at least "In The End" would have given them a fighting chance of doing something (however tiny a chance it may have been). Releasing "I Run" was not only ALWAYS going to be completely and utterly a waste of time, but it also gave the impression of a band who were lazy and didnt give a shit if it anyone bought it or not. Not even bothering to muster a b-side for it just added to this. Considering the band have only been back 5 minutes, its a worry.

Yeah it's rather sad, I don't know if that was a band or record company decision but if they were going with this whole dark idea releasing "i run" was one of the strangest things to do!! It's just a bland song which wasn't even that popular with the majority of the fans says it all really

Self Attack Mechanism get my vote as it's the only song that gives me a lift and makes me smile on the album.

While all of the songs on the Embrace album are good, Refugees is the best. Its production is perfect (especially compared to that of TND), with attention paid to every detail, and more so than the rest of the album. In a way, Refugees, as lead single, is this era's Hooligan. Refugees marks a dramatic shift in style for the band, as well as not being your conventional single (to the point that it was denied airplay), just like Hooligan.

i can't agree on the production. the major let down for me is the drum sound. for some they haven't really got a good drum sound on an album since drawn from memory (although did on some b-sides from oon and tnd), but they are clearly just triggered on this album presumably because it was self produced in their own studio setups and is too costly to get a good acoustic drum sound. i can't remember which song it is, maybe in the end, where the drums disappear when the louder chorus comes in, so there are some issues with mixing there that would have been fixed if the album had been mixed by a decent engineer.
