Anybody know why Embrace never got a proper shot at trying to crack America?.

Not really. When TGWO came out they were supposed to come here but the label (Geffen) got bought out and they got dropped, I think.
They tried again during OON and it seemed like they were well received but not sure what happened after that.

Although I'm from the UK my favourite gig ever was seeing Embrace in San Francisco during their Out Of Nothing tour. They were supported by Augustana (who if you've never heard are worth checking out, Californian band fronted by Dan Layus who just released their fourth studio album) and Longview (whose only ever album Mercury remains a personal favourite). The gig was in a pretty small venue - probably 1000 person capacity and it wasn't full unfortunately - but the band were on great form and to hear them in such an intimate setting was really special (it was shortly before I saw them at Ally Pally where the size of the venue really swamped them). In terms of trying to "crack" America, I know TGWO got a proper release there but for whatever reason the band/label never seemed to commit to the US - to be fair so few UK bands have any success there and the effort you have to put in is arguably disproportionate to the rewards on offer.
